Marcus Garvey eloquently described black skin as “a glorious symbol of national greatness.” This statement is a powerful depiction of the variety and beauty of black skin. Unfortunately, the fashion industry has not always embraced or catered to our unique features. For those whose skin tone is of a darker hue, there has been a challenge to find hosiery, or even a bra that is complimentary to their complexion. As we progress towards racial diversity in the fashion industry, Nubian is the new nude, and if you don’t know you better ask Ade Hassan, founder of Nubian Skin, nude lingerie and hosiery for women of color.
After becoming frustrated by the lack of skin-tone choices to go with her wardrobe, Ade decided it was time for ‘a different kind of nude’. Inspired by trail blazing women, Eunice W. Johnson and super model Iman, who created Fashion Fair and Iman cosmetics, Ade took the leap in October 2014 and launched Nubian Skin.
The brand garnered a large following pretty rapidly, and has gained over 28,000 Instagram followers since its account was set up in late August. The website includes a guide to help customers pick from their skintones – Berry, Cinnamon, Caramel and Café au Lait. The guide provides a description of each skin tone as well as a foundation matching guide. During an interview with Huffington Post UK in November, Ade shared the most rewarding part of her job:
“I receive beautiful emails from people - I got one from a university student recently who said ‘there isn’t a lot of diversity where I am, but I’m saving for my first Nubian Skin bra.' I hope our products make people think 'my skin tone actually matters.”
